Timing your Pyrenees cycling trip is crucial. The high cols are snow-covered for much of the year, and cycling season is relatively short. Here's when to go for the best experience.
May-June: The Quiet Season
May and June offer quiet roads and mild temperatures, but the highest cols (Tourmalet, Portet) may still be snow-covered. Check road conditions before you go. The lower cols (Aspin, Peyresourde) are usually open by May.
July-August: Peak Season
July and August are the best months for cycling all the cols. All roads are open, the weather is warm, and the days are long. However, this is also peak tourist season, so roads can be busy. If the Tour de France is in town, expect even more crowds.
September: The Sweet Spot
September is arguably the best month for cycling the Pyrenees. The crowds have thinned, the weather is still warm, and all cols remain open. The light is beautiful, and the roads are quieter. Highly recommended.
